Methergin – a drug for stimulating uterine contractions.
It is used for the prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, as well as in cases of uterine atony or hypotonia. It provides rapid and sustained contraction of the myometrium.
Composition (per 1 tablet):
• Methylergometrine hydrogen maleate – 0.125 mg.
Pharmacological properties:
Methylergometrine is a semi-synthetic derivative of ergotamine that exerts a strong and rapid uterotonic effect. It stimulates the smooth muscle of the uterus, especially in the postpartum period, causing rhythmic contractions and increasing myometrial tone.
The effect begins 5–10 minutes after oral administration and lasts for several hours.
Methylergometrine may also cause mild vasoconstrictive action.
Indications for use:
• Prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage associated with uterine atony or hypotonia
• Enhancement of uterine contractions after placental separation
• Involution of the uterus in the postpartum period
• In case of bleeding in the early postpartum period.
Dosage and administration:
Orally, after childbirth:
• 1 tablet (0.125 mg) 2–3 times a day
• Course duration is usually 2–7 days, depending on the patient’s condition.
The tablet should be swallowed whole with water.
Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting a doctor.
