Femara contains the active ingredient called letrozole. It belongs to a group of drugs known as aromatase inhibitors. This is a hormonal (or "endocrine") treatment for breast cancer. Breast cancer growth is often stimulated by estrogen, which is a female sex hormone. Femara reduces the amount of estrogen by blocking the enzyme ("aromatase") involved in estrogen production, and thus can block the growth of estrogen-dependent breast cancer. As a result, tumor cells slow down or stop growing and/or spreading to other parts of the body.
