Zithromax - Zithromax 500 mg 3 tablets Composition: Active ingredient: • Azithromycin - 500 mg Excipients of the core: • Pregelatinized starch • Calcium phosphate anhydrous (acidic) • Sodium carmellose • Magnesium stearate • Sodium lauryl sulfate • Purified (deionized) water. Pharmacological properties: Azithromycin has a bacteriostatic effect, blocking protein synthesis in the microbial cell by binding to ribosomes. It has activity against gram-positive, gram-negative and some atypical microorganisms. Advantages: • Long-term action: one dose per day is enough • Good tolerability • High concentration in tissues. Indications for use: • Upper and lower respiratory tract infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia) • Skin and soft tissue infections • Sinusitis, otitis • Urogenital infections (including those caused by Chlamydia trachomatis) • Sexually transmitted infections. Method of administration and dosage: Adults: For the treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, as well as oral and dental infections: 500 mg once daily for 3 consecutive days. For the treatment of sexually transmitted infections caused by susceptible strains of Chlamydia trachomatis and Haemophilus ducreyi: 1,000 mg once, single oral administration. Elderly: The same dosage regimen can be used in elderly patients. Since elderly patients are more susceptible to developing cardiac arrhythmia, special caution is recommended due to the risk of arrhythmia and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. Children: 10 mg/kg/day for 3 consecutive days. For children weighing 45 kg or more, the adult dose (500 mg/day for 3 days) may be used. • For children weighing less than 15 kg: 10 mg/kg/day for 3 days • For children 15–25 kg: 200 mg/day for 3 days • For children 26–35 kg: 300 mg/day for 3 days • For children 36–45 kg: 400 mg/day for 3 days • For children over 45 kg: 500 mg/day for 3 days (adult dose). For the treatment of acute otitis media in children, the recommended dose is 10 mg/kg/day for 3 days. For the treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis in children, efficacy has been demonstrated at doses of 10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg, both as a single dose and for three days. However, the daily dose of 500 mg should not be exceeded. Similar efficacy was observed in clinical studies at both doses, but a higher bacterial eradication rate was observed at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day. Nevertheless, penicillin remains the drug of choice for the treatment of pharyngitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and for the prevention of rheumatic fever. The maximum dose allowed for any pediatric patient is 1,500 mg. The drug should always be given as a single dose during the day.
