Properties:
Secnidazole has a bactericidal effect against most anaerobic bacteria and many protozoa.
Indications for use:
intestinal amebiasis
hepatic amebiasis
urogenital trichomoniasis
Dosage and method of administration:
(It is advisable to take the dose with meals)
for acute intestinal amebiasis (1 day of treatment):
-Adults: 2 tablets (2g) as a single dose
-Children: 30mg/kg as a single or divided dose.
with hepatic amebiasis (treatment within 5 days):
-Adults 1.5 g as a single dose/day
-Children 30 mg/kg day as single or divided doses
with urogenital trichomoniasis:
-2 tablets (2g) as a single dose
Contraindications:
-increased sensitivity to imidazole derivatives
Contraindicated in pregnancy.
During treatment, breastfeeding should be discontinued.
Side effects:
-Some gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, and a metallic taste in the mouth
Moderate leukopenia, which subsequently disappears.
-Rarely – dizziness, impaired coordination of movements, ataxia, paresthesia
Drug interactions:
-It should be avoided during the treatment of drinking alcohol.
Secnidazole should not be taken with warfarin or any other anticoagulant, as it increases the risk of bleeding, or under the close supervision and supervision of a healthcare professional.
