Pharmacological properties:
Rifaximin is an antibiotic from the rifamycin group with the following properties:
Antimicrobial action:
Blocks bacterial RNA polymerase, disrupting RNA synthesis in susceptible bacteria.
Mainly effective in the intestinal lumen, with minimal absorption into systemic circulation.
Minimal systemic effect:
Poorly absorbed — acts locally in the intestines, reducing the risk of systemic side effects.
Additional effects:
• Reduces ammonia production in the intestines in hepatic insufficiency
• Improves symptoms of IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D).
Indications for use:
• Hepatic encephalopathy (to reduce the risk of recurrence)
• Irritable bowel syndrome with predominant diarrhea (IBS-D)
• Traveler’s diarrhea caused by non-invasive Escherichia coli.
Method of administration and dosage:
• Adults and children over 12 years: take 1 tablet orally once daily.
• Course duration depends on the indication:
– For hepatic encephalopathy — long-term (prophylaxis)
– For IBS-D — up to 14 days
– For diarrhea — 3 days.
