Indications:
Tenofovir is an antiviral drug belonging to the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor class. It is used to treat:
Chronic HIV-1 infection in adults
Chronic hepatitis B virus infection
It is used as part of combination therapy for HIV infection and is not used as monotherapy.
Mechanism of Action:
Tenofovir works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme necessary for viral replication within cells. This prevents the virus from spreading within the body and reduces the viral load over time, helping to improve immunity and reduce the deterioration of liver function in hepatitis B.
Dosage and Administration:
Usual adult dosage: One tablet (300 mg) once daily.
Taken with or without food.
The daily dose should be taken at approximately the same time.
Do not adjust the dose or discontinue treatment without medical supervision.
Precautions:
Kidney function should be regularly assessed while using this medication.
Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney disease.
It is recommended not to share this medication with anyone else.
Do not use as a prophylactic treatment after exposure to the virus except as part of a specific medical protocol.
Do not stop treatment suddenly to avoid the risk of worsening hepatitis B infection.
