Composition:
Each tablet contains:
Cephalexin monohydrate — equivalent to 1 g of cephalexin
Pharmacological properties:
Cefalexin is a 1st generation beta-lactam antibiotic from the cephalosporin group:
1. Mechanism of action:
• Disrupts the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
• Has a bactericidal effect (leads to the death of the microbial cell)
2. Spectrum of activity:
• Effective against:
– Staphylococcus aureus (including penicillinase-producing)
– Streptococcus pneumoniae
– Streptococcus pyogenes
– Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae
3. Pharmacokinetics:
• Well absorbed when taken orally
• Reaches therapeutic concentrations in tissues and urine
• Excreted primarily by the kidneys
Indications for use:
• Upper respiratory tract infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis)
• Lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia)
• Urinary tract infections (cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis)
• Skin and soft tissue infections (furunculosis, impetigo, abscesses)
• Bone and joint infections
• Prevention of bacterial infections before surgery (as indicated)
Method of administration and dosage:
• Usual adult dose:
— 250–1000 mg every 6–12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection
— Maximum daily dose — up to 4 g/day
• Ceporex 1 g:
— Usually 1 tablet is taken every 12 hours (2 times a day)
• Duration of treatment — usually from 7 to 14 days
The tablet is taken orally, regardless of food intake, with water.
In case of impaired renal function, a dose adjustment is required.
