Composition:
Amoxycillin (as amoxycillin trihydrate (Compacted)) 125 mg/143.47 mg
Flucloxacillin (as flucloxacillin sodium monohydrate (Compacted)) 125 mg/136.32 mg
Pharmacological action:
Flumox is a combination of two broad spectrum penicillins: amoxycillin (broad-spectrum penicillin) and flucloxacillin (a penicillinase-resistant penicillin). This combination exhibits a bacterial activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms. Flucloxacillin exerts a bactericidal action on penicillinase-producing and non-penicillinase-producina Staphylococci, Streptococcus pyogenes, pneumoniae, and faecalis; Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Clostridia spp., Bacillus anthracis; H. influenzae, Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis, N. gonorrheae and meningitidis, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella, Bordetella pertussis, and Bacteroides melaninogenicus.
Indications:
Flumox is indicated in the treatment of a wide range of infections including:
- Respiratory tract infections: Bronchitis, pneumonia and empyema.
- Ear, nose and throat infections: Otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis and pharyngitis.
- Gastro-intestinal tract infections: Enteritis, cholecystitis, typhoid and paratyphoid, peritonitis and intra- abdominal abscesses, and biliary tract infections.
- Genito-urinary tract infections: Cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, gonorrhea, and puerperal sepsis.
- Skin and soft-tissue infections: Boils, carbuncles, abscesses, cellulitis and postoperative wound infections
- Bone infections: Osteomyelitis.
- Other infections: Septicaemia and endocarditis.
Dosage and Administration:
Adults: The usual oral dose is 1g every 8 hours, 250 to 500 mg every 8 hours, doubled in severe infections, or 500 every 12 hours.
Children up to 10 years of age: May be given 125 to 250 mg every 8 hours;
For those under 40 kg: A dose of 20 to 40 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 8 tours, or 25 to 45 mg/kg dally in divided doses every 12 hours, may be used;
In infants less than 3 months old: The maximum dose should be 30 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 12 hours.
Reconstitution of Flumox Dry Mix: To make up, first shake the bottle to loosen the powder, then add the volume of water stated on the carton box to the content of the bottle and shake well. Once reconstituted, Flumox must be stored in a refrigerator and used within 10 days.
Contraindications:
A known hypersensitivity to penicillin.
Precautions:
Doses should be reduced in severe renal impairment.
Side effects:
As with other penicillins, side-effects are usually infrequent, mild and transient including diarrhoea, indigestion and skin rashes.
Storage:
Store in a dry place at a temperature not exceeding 25° C, and protect from light.
