Trade Name: Optidex-T Sterile ophthalmic solution 5 ml Composition: Each ml of Optidex T suspension contains: Tobramycin 3 mg (0.3% ww) Dexamethasone 1 mg (0.1% wN). Benzalkonium Chloride 0.06 mg (0.006% as preservative), Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose Properties: Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties. It is about 25 times more potent than hydrocortisone in its anti-inflammatory action. Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic, which is active against many strains of gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Indication: -For the treatment of steroid responsive conditions of the eye when prophylactic antibiotic treatment is also required, after excluding the presence of fungal and viral diseases. -Inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, cornea and anterior segment of the globe. Also indicated in chronic anterior uveitis, corneal injury from chemical, radiation or thermal burns, or from penetration of foreign bodies. Postoperative management of cataract, glaucoma and strabismus. -Tobramycin is active against the following common bacterial eye pathogens: Staphylococci, including S.aureus and s. epidenids (coaguiasepostive and coagulase-negative), including penicillin-resistant strains Streptococci, inducing some of the group of beta-hemolytic species, some nonhemolytic species, streptococcus pneumoniae, pseudomonas aeruginosa, escherichia coli, klebsiella pneumoniae, enterobacter aerogenes, proteus mirabilis, morganella morganii, most proteus vulgaris strains, haemophilus influenzae and H, aegyptius, moraxella lacunata, acinetobacter calcoaceticus and some neisseria species. Dosage and administration: -Instill one to two drops of the suspension into the conjunctival sac every four to six hours. -During the initial 24 to 48 hours the frequency may be increased to one or two drops every two hours. -Do not discontinue treatment prematurely -Children: The safety and effectiveness of this preparation for children has not been established. Side Effects: -Prolonged topical use of corticosteroids may bring about glaucoma, affecting the optic nerve, causing alterations in the vision. If Optidex T™ is administaçed for more than 10 days, ocular pressure should be regularly monitored by the physician. -Prolonged use of corticosteroids may increase risk of secondary ocular infections, masking an acute infection. -As with other antibiotics, prolonged use may bring about the growth of resistant organisms. Treatment should not be withdrawn too early, in order to avoid a renewed outbreak of the infection. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to any of the components; Epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), Vaccinia, varicella, and many other viral disease of the cornea and conjunctiva; Mycobacterial infections of the eye; Fungal infections of the eye; Following uncomplicated removal of a corneal foreign body; Glaucoma. Warnings and precautions: Not for injection into the eye. It is not known whether it can cause fetal harm when istered to a pregnant woman. It is not known whether the components of this preparation are expressed in human milk because many drugs are excreted in human milk. Use with caution in nursing Women. Category C: should be given only if the potential benefit for mother justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Keep out of reach of children. Storage: Store at a temperature 15-25°C.
