This medication is primarily used to treat "Parkinsonism"—a group of disorders that cause movement problems similar to Parkinson's disease, often as a side effect of other medications.
Primary Indications:
Drug-Induced Movement Disorders: To control restlessness (akathisia) and muscle spasms caused by antipsychotic drugs (neuroleptics).
Parkinson’s Disease: Used as an add-on therapy to help reduce muscle rigidity and tremors.
Acute Dystonia: Maintenance treatment to prevent the return of severe muscle contractions in the neck, eyes, or tongue.
Secondary Indications:
Clozapine-Induced Salivation: Sometimes used to reduce excessive drooling caused by certain psychiatric medications.
Usage: Usually one tablet (2 mg) 1 to 3 times daily. Your doctor may start with a low dose and increase it gradually up to a maximum of 16 mg per day. It is best taken with or after meals to avoid stomach upset.
Important: * Memory & Confusion: Can cause forgetfulness or "brain fog," especially in the elderly.
Dryness: Common side effects include very dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation.
Heat Sensitivity: It reduces sweating; avoid hot environments or heavy exercise to prevent heatstroke.
