Intro: Atrovent is a specialized inhalation solution containing Ipratropium Bromide. It is an "anticholinergic" bronchodilator that works by blocking the chemicals that cause the muscles around the airways to tighten. Unlike rescue inhalers that work instantly, Atrovent is often used for maintenance or in combination with other medicines to provide long-lasting relief from breathing difficulties. Indications: COPD & Emphysema: Maintenance treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to keep airways open. Chronic Bronchitis: Relieves long-term wheezing and chest tightness. Acute Asthma Attacks: Often used in a nebulizer alongside Salbutamol (Farcolin) to enhance the bronchodilating effect during severe episodes. Post-Surgery: Used to assist breathing for patients on assisted ventilation or after lung surgeries. How to Use: Administration: For use only with a nebulizer machine. Do not swallow or inject. Dosage (Adults & Children >12y): Usually 1 or 2 vials (250–500mcg) 3 to 4 times daily. Dosage (Children <12y): Usually 1 vial (250mcg) up to 3 times daily, as directed by a doctor. Preparation: Twist off the top of the vial and squeeze the entire contents into the nebulizer chamber. Your doctor may tell you to dilute it with sterile saline. Crucial Rules: Eye Protection: Very Important. Ensure the nebulizer mask fits tightly or use a mouthpiece. If the mist gets into your eyes, it can cause blurred vision, pupil dilation, or a painful spike in eye pressure (glaucoma). Preservative-Free: These UDVs (Unit Dose Vials) are preservative-free, making them gentler on the lungs than multidose bottles. Prostate/Urinary Issues: Use with caution if you have an enlarged prostate or difficulty urinating, as the medicine can worsen these symptoms. Onset of Action: It starts working within 15 minutes but reaches its full effect after 1–2 hours. It is not a standalone rescue medication for sudden, severe attacks.
