Minalax – Laxative Tablets
Available at Pharmaegy Pharmacy. Use as directed by your doctor.
Intro: Minalax is a reliable stimulant laxative produced by Amoun Pharmaceutical Co. It features a balanced combination of two active ingredients: Bisacodyl (5mg) and Docusate Sodium (100mg). While Bisacodyl directly stimulates the muscles of the intestines to push waste through, Docusate Sodium acts as a "stool softener" by allowing water and fats to enter the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. This "dual-action" approach provides relief from constipation with less strain.
Indications:
Acute Constipation: Short-term relief for occasional difficulty in passing stool.
Chronic Constipation: Managing long-term bowel sluggishness under medical supervision.
Pre-Surgical Prep: Emptying the bowels before medical examinations, X-rays, or surgery.
Post-Operative Recovery: Preventing straining after surgery or childbirth.
How to Use:
Dosage: Usually 1 to 2 tablets daily.
Timing: It is best taken at bedtime. Since it typically takes 6 to 12 hours to produce a bowel movement, taking it at night ensures relief the following morning.
Administration: Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush or chew, as this can destroy the protective coating and cause stomach irritation or cramping.
Crucial Rules:
The 7-Day Limit: Do not use laxatives for more than 7 consecutive days. Overuse can lead to "lazy bowel syndrome," where your intestines lose the ability to function without medication.
The "Milk/Antacid" Rule: Do not take Minalax within 1 hour of drinking milk or taking antacids. These substances can dissolve the tablet’s coating prematurely in the stomach, leading to severe abdominal pain.
Hydration: Always drink plenty of water (at least 6-8 glasses a day) while using laxatives to help the stool-softening process.
Warning Signs: Avoid use if you have severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or signs of appendicitis.
Generic International Brands: DulcoEase (similar combination), Peri-Colace.
