Laxeol Pi – 5mg Tablets
Available at Pharmaegy Pharmacy. Use as directed by your doctor.
Intro: Laxeol Pi is a widely used stimulant laxative produced by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Its active ingredient is Sodium Picosulfate (5mg). This medication is a "prodrug," meaning it remains inactive while passing through the stomach and small intestine. It only becomes active when it reaches the colon, where natural bacteria break it down. This specific action makes it a targeted treatment that directly stimulates the colon's muscles to move waste along.
Indications:
Occasional Constipation: Effective for short-term relief of bowel irregularity.
Bowel Clearance: Often used to empty the bowels before radiologic examinations, endoscopic procedures (like colonoscopies), or surgery.
Painful Defecation: Helping to ease the passage of stool for patients with hemorrhoids or anal fissures.
How to Use:
Dosage: For adults, the usual dose is 1 to 2 tablets once daily.
Timing: It is best taken at night. Since it typically takes 6 to 12 hours to work, taking it before bed ensures a bowel movement the following morning.
Flexibility: Unlike some other stimulant laxatives, Laxeol Pi is known for being relatively predictable in its timing.
Crucial Rules:
Avoid Dependency: Do not use Laxeol Pi for more than 5 to 7 consecutive days. Prolonged use can lead to electrolyte imbalances (low potassium) and permanent "sluggishness" of the bowel.
Hydration is Key: You must drink plenty of water while using this medication. Stimulant laxatives work better and cause less cramping when the body is well-hydrated.
Cramping: It is common to experience mild abdominal discomfort or cramps. If the pain is severe, discontinue use and consult a doctor.
Contraindications: Do not use if you have severe dehydration, intestinal obstruction (blockage), or undiagnosed acute abdominal pain (which could be appendicitis).
Generic International Brands: Dulcolax Pico, Laxoberal, Guttalax.
