Duphalac – 667mg/ml Oral Solution
Available at Pharmaegy Pharmacy. Use as directed by your doctor.
Intro: Duphalac is a world-renowned osmotic laxative produced by Abbott Laboratories. Its active ingredient is Lactulose, a synthetic sugar that is not absorbed by the human body. Instead, it travels to the colon where it is broken down by natural bacteria into organic acids. These acids draw water into the bowel through osmosis, increasing the stool’s volume and softening it. Because it works with the body's natural processes rather than irritating the nerves, it is often considered one of the gentlest options for long-term use.
Indications:
Chronic Constipation: Regulating the physiological rhythm of the colon.
Hemorrhoids & Post-Surgery: Softening stools to prevent pain or bleeding after anal or rectal procedures.
Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE): A specialized use for liver disease patients where high doses are used to lower blood ammonia levels.
Safe for All Ages: Often the first choice for infants, pregnant women, and the elderly.
How to Use:
Adult Dosage: Initially 15 to 45 ml daily as a single dose or divided. Once stabilized, it is reduced to 15 to 30 ml daily.
Pediatric Dosage:
7–14 years: 15 ml daily.
1–6 years: 5–10 ml daily.
Under 1 year: Up to 5 ml daily.
Timing: Best taken once daily at breakfast. Consistency is key—take it at the same time every day.
Onset of Action: It is a "slow-acting" laxative. It may take 2 to 3 days to see the full effect, so do not increase the dose prematurely.
Crucial Rules:
Hydration: You must drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily. Without enough fluid, the medicine cannot effectively "draw" water into the stool.
Sugar Content: Contains small amounts of lactose and galactose. While safe for most diabetics at normal doses, it should be used cautiously. It is strictly forbidden for those with Galactosaemia.
The "Gas" Phase: Flatulence (gas) is very common during the first few days. This usually disappears as your gut adjusts to the medicine.
Administration: Can be taken undiluted or mixed with water/juice. Swallow immediately; do not keep the liquid in your mouth for long periods to protect your teeth from the sugar content.
Generic International Brands: Normase, Lactulose, Constulose, Enulose.
