Picolax – 7.5mg/ml Oral Drops
Available at Pharmaegy Pharmacy. Use as directed by your doctor.
Intro: Picolax is a highly concentrated stimulant laxative produced by EIPICO. Its active ingredient is Sodium Picosulfate (7.5mg/ml). Similar to Laxeol Pi, it is a "prodrug" that remains inactive until it reaches the colon, where gut bacteria activate it. The drop form is particularly popular because it allows for very precise dosing, making it easy to adjust according to the severity of the constipation or the patient's age.
Indications:
Acute Constipation: Rapid, short-term relief for bowel irregularity.
Chronic Constipation: Managing long-term sluggishness under strict medical supervision.
Diagnostic Preparation: Clearing the bowel before X-rays, colonoscopies, or surgery.
Precise Dosing: Ideal for patients who need a tailored dose that falls between standard tablet strengths.
How to Use:
Dosage (Adults & Children >10 years): Usually 10 to 18 drops (1.5–3 ml) once daily.
Dosage (Children 4–10 years): Usually 5 to 10 drops once daily.
Timing: Best taken at bedtime. It typically takes 6 to 12 hours to work, resulting in a bowel movement the following morning.
Administration: Can be taken directly or mixed with water, juice, or milk.
Crucial Rules:
Do Not Overuse: Limit use to 5 to 7 days. Chronic use can lead to "dependency," where the bowel cannot move without chemical stimulation.
Hydration: Always drink a full glass of water with the drops and maintain high fluid intake throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
Cramping & Electrolytes: May cause abdominal cramps. Long-term use or high doses can lead to a loss of essential minerals like potassium.
Contraindications: Avoid if you have undiagnosed stomach pain, vomiting, or signs of an intestinal blockage.
Generic International Brands: Dulcolax Pico Liquid, Guttalax, Laxoberal.
